Discover Unagi Sakuraya

If you're ever in Mishima, Shizuoka, make sure to check out Unagi Sakuraya. Nestled in the quiet corner of 13-2 Hirokojicho, this hidden gem is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic taste of unagi, or eel, served in the most delightful ways. Known for its tradition and quality, the restaurant offers a blend of comfort and culinary expertise, making it a favorite among locals and travelers alike.

The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the warm, inviting atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. Unagi, a delicacy in Japanese cuisine, can be found at many restaurants, but Unagi Sakuraya takes it to a whole new level. The chefs here have mastered the art of grilling eel, ensuring every bite is tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The unagi is grilled to perfection, caramelized on the outside while maintaining a soft, succulent texture inside.

What sets Unagi Sakuraya apart is not just the quality of their eel but also the variety of ways they prepare it. One of their most popular dishes is unagi donburi, where the grilled eel is served over a bed of steamed rice, drenched in a rich, savory sauce. For those who prefer a lighter option, they offer grilled eel on skewers, paired with a simple side of rice or vegetables. It’s a perfect meal whether you're dining solo or with family.

But let’s not forget the sides. The restaurant offers a range of traditional Japanese accompaniments like miso soup, pickles, and steamed vegetables. Each side dish complements the unagi beautifully, adding layers of flavor to the overall experience. The miso soup, in particular, is a standout, with a deep umami flavor that pairs perfectly with the rich eel.

A great feature of Unagi Sakuraya is its commitment to freshness. The eel is sourced from local suppliers, ensuring that only the best quality fish is used. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the meal. Whether you're visiting for lunch or dinner, you're guaranteed a satisfying meal that reflects the chef’s passion for unagi.

For those new to unagi or unsure about what to order, the staff is more than happy to offer recommendations. They provide detailed explanations about the various preparations and help guide you through the menu. The service is friendly and efficient, making for a stress-free dining experience. It’s the perfect balance of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern service.

Not only is the food top-notch, but the location of Unagi Sakuraya also adds to its charm. Positioned in the heart of Mishima, it's easy to find and conveniently located for a stop after sightseeing. The restaurant is cozy, with a laid-back ambiance that makes it ideal for a relaxed meal. Whether you’re in town for a short visit or living in the area, Unagi Sakuraya provides a dining experience that feels both local and extraordinary.

  • We were fortunate to arrive at the restaurant around noon, and there was no crowd at that time. After taking a number, we waited for about 10 minutes before being seated. By then, a small queue had already started to form. The meal included: Unaju with one and a half eel fillets Unagi Tamagoyaki (eel omelette) Grilled unagi liver Fried unagi bones The eel was expertly deboned, with almost no trace of fine bones. The seasoning was on the heavier side, but I personally loved it. This, of course, depends on individual preferences. Our seating that day was on the second floor, where it was entirely tatami-style. For those of us unaccustomed to this type of seating, it was quite a challenge.

  • Very well known, old, popular unagi restaurant. Got the two layer, two whole unagi special. The unagi tasted very fresh, flavorful ( not the over sauced kind) and meaty, tender. Just delicious! Definitely pricy, but worth it!

  • For the first contact it was a good experience. Was looking for a five star score, but the time waiting, the portions and the overall report quality Vs. price was unbalanced.

  • Taste is good but we waited over an hour during lunch hour. If u don't like to spend time to queue up, suggest u may arrive there earlier or later time.

  • Amazing unagi. If you like this, and are nearby, this would be a great place for a meal but be prepared for a wait for a seat.

  • CASH ONLY. Visited after researching the best place for unagi, luckily we were seated almost right away at 6PM on a Saturday with no reservation, though I could see they were set up for long queues with benches and a giant heater outside. They let us share the Extra Large Unaju (4x pieces) between two people, and we also ordered some sides. After tasting the unagi here, I can say the main difference between this and your average cheap Unagi don is the one here was incredibly soft and tender and melt in your mouth, you barely needed to chew. It was also super fresh, with the texture more like an actual soft white fish than the unagi texture I'm used to. Warning: there were still quite a few tiny bones, you mostly won't notice them unless you're unlucky enough to get one stuck between your teeth/gums. Sides - both the deep fried eel bones and eel liver were tasty, though the servings were super tiny; it's more like a small taste of a delicacy than something filling. Be prepared to spend at least 5280 if you come here for unadon/unaju! Note: They do have an English menu and some English-speaking staff.
